How tall can a front-yard fence be in Santa Ana?
As of November 2026, section 41-610 of the Santa Ana Municipal Code allows front-yard fences up to 3 feet on most residential streets and up to 4 feet on streets designated as arterials in the General Plan. Other walls and fences can reach 8 feet. Any front-yard fence taller than 18 inches needs a city permit.

Fence repairWhy is the front yard the tricky part in Santa Ana?
Because the city regulates it closely. A front-yard fence over 18 inches needs a permit, and the height cap depends on whether your street is an arterial. That is why so many Santa Ana homes have a low wrought-iron fence and gate out front.
Behind the house it is simpler. Side and rear walls and fences can go up to 8 feet, which leaves room for real privacy along the back of the lot.
